Camera or Microphone Not Working? Here's How to Fix It

If you're seeing a hardware error message ("Oh no, looks like there's some trouble with your hardware"), don't worry. This is one of the most common issues and almost always a quick fix. Your browser just needs permission to use your camera and microphone, and we'll walk you through it together. You've got this.

Start here: the 30-second fix

Before anything else, try these three things in order. They solve most issues:

  1. Tap Start Over or Refresh the page
  2. If a permission prompt appears, tap Allow for both camera and microphone

If your camera and mic now show up in the preview, you're good to keep going. If not, find your device and browser below.

On a computer (Chrome)

  1. Click the small icon to the left of the website address. It might look like a lock, two sliders, or a camera.
  2. In the panel that opens, find Camera and Microphone
  3. Turn both toggles on
  4. Refresh the page

If you don't see Camera or Microphone in that panel, here's the longer way:

  1. Click the three-dot menu in the top right corner of Chrome
  2. Click Settings
  3. Click Privacy and security, then Site settings
  4. Click Camera, find the interview website in the list, and set it to Allow. Repeat for Microphone.
  5. Refresh your interview

On a Mac (Safari)

  1. With your interview tab open, click the small icon to the left of the website address (it looks like two sliders)
  2. In the panel that opens, find Camera and Microphone
  3. Set both to Allow
  4. Refresh the page

On an iPhone or iPad (Safari)

  1. Tap the small page icon to the left of the website address (it looks like a tiny document)
  2. Tap the three-dot icon in the bottom right corner to open the Page Menu
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the Page Menu to find Website Settings
  4. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow
  5. Close the menu and refresh the page

Safari Page Menu on iPhone scrolled to the Website Settings section, showing Camera and Microphone set to Allow for the interview website.

On an iPhone or iPad (Chrome)

Chrome on iPhone has its own permission settings, separate from Safari.

Quickest fix, from your interview tab:

  1. On the left side of the address bar, look for a small camera or microphone icon (it only appears if you've changed permissions for the site before). Tap it.
  2. Turn Permissions on
  3. Refresh the page

If you don't see that icon, check your iPhone's Chrome settings:

  1. Open the Settings app
  2. Scroll down and tap Apps, then tap Chrome
  3. Turn on Camera and Microphone
  4. Return to Chrome and refresh your interview

iPhone Settings screen for the Chrome app showing camera and microphone access turned on.

On an Android phone (Chrome)

  1. In Chrome, tap the lock icon to the left of the website address
  2. Tap Permissions
  3. Set Camera and Microphone to Allow
  4. Refresh the page

If that doesn't work, your phone may also be blocking Chrome at the system level:

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Apps, then tap Chrome
  3. Tap Permissions
  4. Make sure Camera and Microphone are set to Allow
  5. Return to Chrome and refresh your interview

On a computer (Microsoft Edge)

  1. Click the lock icon to the left of the website address
  2. Find Camera and Microphone in the panel
  3. Set both to Allow
  4. Refresh the page

Still not working?

A few more things worth trying:

  • Close other apps that use your camera. Zoom, FaceTime, Google Meet, and Teams can hold onto your camera even when they're not on screen. Quit them fully and refresh the page.
  • Try a different browser. Chrome and Safari are the most reliable. If you started in another browser, copy your interview link and paste it into one of those.
  • Check antivirus or privacy software. Some programs block websites from using your camera. If you have one running, allow access for the interview website.
  • Restart your device. Old reliable. Fixes more than you'd think.
