How to Record Your Wedge Interview
You've been invited to record a one-way video interview with Wedge. This guide walks you through the whole thing, start to finish, so you know exactly what to expect.
The good news: it's simple, and you can do it on your own time.
What a Wedge interview is
A Wedge is a short video interview you record on your own time. You answer questions on video whenever it works for you, from wherever you are.
You'll see each question for the first time during the interview, just like you would in a live conversation. You'll get think time before every question to gather your thoughts.
A few things that make it easier than a traditional interview:
- No scheduling back and forth.
- No logins or apps to download.
- Works on your phone, tablet, or computer.
- A practice question before you start.
- Retakes on every answer.
Most candidates finish in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Before you start
You don't need much. Just:
- The invite link from the company that's hiring.
- A device with a camera and microphone (your phone works great).
- A quiet spot where you won't be interrupted.
- A few minutes of uninterrupted time.
You do not need a resume, an account, or any special software.
Step 1: Open your invite
Check your email for a message from the hiring team. The subject line usually mentions the job you applied for.

Open the email and click Get Started. That link opens your interview in a web browser.
If you can't find the email, check your spam or promotions folder. Still missing? Reach out to the company that invited you and they can resend it.
Step 2: Meet your interviewer
When your interview opens, you'll see a welcome screen with the job title and either a short video from someone on the hiring team or a few words on the page introducing the interview.

Click Play Intro to watch the welcome video. This is a quick hello from the hiring team, usually under a minute. It's a nice way to get a feel for who you'll be talking to.
When you're ready, click Get Started.
Step 3: Enter your name
The hiring team needs to know who they're hearing from.

Type your first and last name, then click Next.
Step 4: Read the interview details
Before you record anything, you'll see an overview of how the interview works.

Here's what to know:
- Number of questions - You'll get a practice question first, then the real interview questions. This screen tells you exactly how many.
- Quiet location - Find a spot where you won't be interrupted. Background noise can make it harder for the hiring team to hear you.
- Resume anytime - If something comes up, you can close your browser and come back later. You'll pick up right where you left off.
- Retakes - Some interviews let you re-record your answers if you don't like your answer. Others give you one take per question. This screen tells you which format applies to your interview, so you'll know what to expect before you start.
When you're ready, click I'm Ready to Practice.
Want to skip the practice round? You can, but we recommend doing it. It takes 2 minutes and helps you feel comfortable before the real questions start.
Step 5: Check your camera and microphone
Wedge needs to see and hear you, so your browser will ask for permission to use your camera and microphone.

Click Allow when your browser prompts you.
Once your camera feed appears, take a quick look:
- Can you see yourself clearly?
- Is your face well-lit? (Sit facing a window or lamp, not with a bright light behind you.)
- When you speak, can you see the audio bar filling up with green?
- Do your camera and microphone names look right in the dropdowns?
If something's off, pick a different camera or microphone from the dropdown menus. When everything looks good, click Continue.
Having trouble? See Fix Camera and Microphone Issues for quick solutions.
Step 6: Try a practice question
The practice question is your warm-up. The hiring team won't see or hear your practice answer. It's just for you.
Play the question

Click Play Question to watch a practice question.
Take your think time
After the question plays, you'll get a few seconds to think about your answer.

Use this time to gather your thoughts. When you're ready, click Start Answer. If you need more time, you can wait for the countdown to finish, and recording will start automatically.
Record your answer

Look at your camera, speak clearly, and answer the question in your own words. You'll see a timer at the top so you know how much time you have left.
When you're done, click End Answer. If you run out of time, recording will stop on its own.
Watch it back (optional)

You can Play your answer to see how it looks, or Retry if you want another go. There's no limit on practice retakes.
When you feel ready, click I'm Done Practicing.
Step 7: Record your real interview
This works exactly like the practice round. The only difference is that these answers are the ones the hiring team will watch.

For each question:
- Click Play Question to hear the question.
- Use your think time to plan your answer.
- Click Start Answer (or wait for the countdown).
- Speak naturally and click End Answer when you're finished.
- Review your answer. Retry if you want to, or move on.
You'll see a question counter like "1 of 4" so you always know where you are.
A few things that help:
- Talk to the camera like it's a person.
- You don't need to memorize anything, be yourself and talk bout your experience.
- Clear, concise answers usually land better than long, meandering ones.
Step 8: You're done
After your last question, you'll see a confirmation screen.

That's it. Your interview is saved and sent to the hiring team.
You'll also get a confirmation email so you have a record that it went through.

If something goes wrong
Here are the most common hiccups and how to fix them:
My camera or microphone isn't working. Check that you clicked Allow when your browser asked for permission. If you clicked Block by accident, refresh the page and try again, or see Fix Camera and Microphone Issues.
I got interrupted mid-interview. Just refresh or close your browser. When you come back to your invite link, you'll pick up right where you left off.
I don't like my answer. If retakes are allowed, use the Retry button before moving on. You can re-record as many times as you need before clicking End Answer on your final take.
My video froze or won't upload. Try switching to a stronger Wi-Fi connection, or use your phone's cellular data. If you're on an older browser, switch to Chrome, Safari, or Edge.
I need help and can't figure it out. Click the Help button in the corner of any screen, or email support@wedgehr.com. We're here 24/7.
Tips for a great interview
A few small things that make a big difference:
- Find good light. Sit facing a window or a lamp so the hiring team can see your face clearly.
- Check your background. A plain wall works great. Tidy up anything distracting behind you.
- Look at the camera, not the screen. It helps you feel like you're talking to a real person.
- Be yourself. The hiring team wants to get to know you. Relax, smile, and speak naturally.
- Don't overthink it. Your first take is usually your best. Trust it.
You've got this.
