This guide will walk you through everything you need to go from creating your account to completing your first interview. Most teams are up and running in under 30 minutes.

What WedgeHR does (in plain English)

WedgeHR helps your team screen volunteers using on-demand video interviews. There is no scheduling, no logins, and no downloads required for the volunteers being interviewed.

Here is the simple flow:

  1. You create a short interview with a few questions
  2. You invite volunteers by email, text, or shareable link
  3. They respond on their own time, from any device
  4. Your team reviews responses and makes better decisions, faster

That is it. You can go deeper later with playlists, collaboration tools, and reporting. But you do not need any of that to start.

What you need before you begin

  • A WedgeHR account (the VolunteerMatters team will set this up for you, or it may already be active)
  • Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge browser
  • The WedgeHR browser extension (required for the integration to work)

The WedgeHR Extension is required. The extension is what connects WedgeHR to your VolunteerMatters account. Without it, the integration will not work. Setup takes about two minutes.

Step 1: Activate your WedgeHR account

VolunteerMatters will help you create a WedgeHR account

Once your account is active, sign in at wedgehr.com. You will land on your WedgeHR Interviews Page, which is your home base for creating interviews and reviewing responses.

Step 2: Install the WedgeHR Extension

The WedgeHR Extension is a browser add-on for Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. It is what makes the WedgeHR integration work inside your VolunteerMatters account. Without it, the integration features will not appear. It takes about 2 minutes to download and enable the Extension.

How to install

  1. Open Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge
  2. Go to wedge.link/extension (or search "WedgeHR Extension" in the Chrome or Edge Web Store)
  3. Click Add to Chrome (or Get if you are using Edge)
  4. Confirm the installation when prompted

How to connect your account

  1. Click the puzzle piece icon in the top-right corner of your browser
  2. Find and click the WedgeHR Extension
  3. Click Connect
  4. Sign in to your WedgeHR account when prompted
  5. You will see a confirmation message that the extension is connected

Tip: Pin the extension to your browser toolbar for easy access. Click the puzzle piece icon, then click the pin icon next to WedgeHR.

If you run into any issues during installation, reach out to your VolunteerMatters account manager for help.

Step 3: See WedgeHR inside your VolunteerMatters Account

Once the extension is installed and your account is connected, WedgeHR features will appear inside your VolunteerMatters account automatically.

And you will see the “Send Invite” button populate as the Credential Name

When you click “Send Invite”, there will be a box that pops up that lets you choose which position you would like to send to the volunteer.

You can also send reminder emails after you send the first invite.

Once the volunteer completes their interview, the button will update to “View Wedge”.  Click this button to review their interview.

If you do not see the WedgeHR features after installing the extension, try these quick fixes:

  • Refresh the page
  • Make sure you are signed in to WedgeHR
  • Confirm the extension is enabled (click the puzzle piece icon and check)
  • Disconnect and reconnect the extension
  • Try a different browser tab or window

Still not working? Reach out to your VolunteerMatters account manager for help.

Step 4: Create your first interview

Creating an interview is the foundation of WedgeHR. This is where you decide what questions to ask and how the experience will feel for the volunteer being interviewed.

You do not need to overthink this. Most great interviews are short, clear, and human. You can always adjust later.

Create a new interview

From your WedgeHR Interviews Page, click Create Interview.

Give your interview:

  • A clear title (usually the role or purpose)
  • A Team or Location (not required, only needed if appropriate)

Personalize your interview

On the Interview Detail page, click on the “Manage Prompts” button to add questions and configure your interview. We recommend recording your own custom prompts as well as an intro and outro video to set the tone for each candidate. For more information about creating custom videos in WedgeHR, check out this Help Article.

Add an introduction

Your introduction builds trust and sets the tone. You can record a short video, write a text intro, or use both.

A strong introduction answers three simple questions:

  1. What is this interview for?
  2. How long will it take?
  3. What should the volunteer expect?

Example intro: "Thanks for taking the time to complete this interview. It should take about 10 to 15 minutes. There are a few short questions, and you can complete them whenever works best for you."

Add questions

You can choose from 60+ pre-recorded questions in the WedgeHR Question Library, record your own, or mix both.

Best practices:

  • Keep it to 3 to 5 questions
  • Focus on real situations, not things people can easily look up
  • Ask what you would normally ask in a first screen or early phone interview

Set response rules

For each question, you can set prep time, response length, and retake rules.

What most teams start with:

  • 30-60 second prep time
  • 45-90 second response time
  • Retakes turned on (unlimited retakes allowed)

These settings help volunteers feel prepared without overthinking. You are learning who they are, not testing performance under pressure.

Add an outro

A short closing message goes a long way. Thank people for their time and let them know what happens next.

Save

Review your questions one last time, confirm the interview length feels reasonable, and save. Your interview is now ready to send.

You can edit it anytime.

Step 5: Invite, Review, and Approve

This is where the integration shines. You will handle invitations, reviews, and approvals from inside your VolunteerMatters account.

Now that your VolunteerMatters and WedgeHR accounts are connected, you are ready to invite volunteers to interview.

You will find the “Send Invite” button as a Credential under the volunteer's name. To invite the volunteer to interview, click the “Send Invite” button.

Once you click the “Send Invite” button, a box will pop up and ask you to choose the role that you want the volunteer to interview for.

Once you send the invite, the button will change to a “Send Reminder” button. You can use this to send reminders to the volunteers who have not completed their interviews.

Once the volunteer completes their interview, the button will change again. This time it will say “View Wedge”. Click this button to view the completed interview.

Tips for a great review process

  • Review interviews within 24 to 48 hours to keep momentum
  • Use the AI Summary after watching to confirm details without re-watching
  • Keep decisions consistent. A simple rubric helps: Do they meet the basic requirements? Can they communicate clearly? Would I want to talk to them next?

Step 6: Manage your WedgeHR account

Once you are up and running, here are a few things to know about managing your WedgeHR account.

Add team members

You can invite additional users to your WedgeHR account so others on your team can create interviews, review responses, and collaborate on decisions.

From your WedgeHR Interviews Page, go to your account settings to add new users and assign roles.

Roles and permissions

WedgeHR lets you control who can do what. Assign roles based on whether someone needs full access or just the ability to review interviews.

Reporting and insights

WedgeHR tracks interview volume, completion rates, and engagement trends. You can view activity from your Interviews Page or the Reports tab in Settings.

These features are there when you need them. You do not need to set them up right away.

What success looks like in your couple of weeks

You do not need perfection. You just need progress.

A healthy first week with WedgeHR looks like this:

  • Extension installed and connected
  • At least one interview created
  • Invitations sent to your first batch of volunteers
  • Responses reviewed within 24 to 48 hours
  • One small tweak to improve the experience (question wording, intro message, or invite copy)

If that is happening, you are on track.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do volunteers need to download an app or create an account to complete an interview? No. They just need a phone or computer with a camera. No apps, no logins, no downloads.

Can I change an interview after sending invitations? Yes. Nothing is locked in forever. You can edit your interview at any time.

What browsers does the Wedge Extension support? Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Other browsers are not supported at this time.

What if the extension is not showing up inside my platform? Refresh the page, make sure you are signed in to WedgeHR, and confirm the extension is enabled. If it still does not appear, contact your VolunteerMatters account representative.

How do I add more users to my Wedge account? Go to your account settings in WedgeHR to invite team members and assign roles.
